Gatorade/Powerade Good or Bad?
- Gatorade and Powerade are Carbohydrate Electrolyte Solutions (CES), that are very popular in North America. Research has shown however that both Gatorade and Powerade do not provide optimal amounts of both carbohydrate or salt in their drinks, and this is because the companies making these drinks have to make them taste good in order for them to sell.
- ACSM recommends that sport drinks contain sports drink s that are 5-10% carbohydrate (should be glucose + fructose), contain 460-690mg/L of sodium (table salt), and 78-195mg/L of potassium (12). This drink could be made fairly easily at home with the use of table salt, sugar, and something like lemon juice for your potassium. It is advised to try these homemade solutions during practice, and training, rather than before a game, as these drinks can taste quite weird, and depending on the person may also cause gastrointestinal discomfort, so play around with the numbers, and find a solution that works best for you!
- Another option would be to add more sodium, and lemon juice to gatorade or Powerade as both these drinks are deficient in these two quantities.
